Making jewellery becomes my communication form, it fulfils the need I have to create objects that can be used; that holds special meanings and provoke in the wearer and the viewer a statement or identity.
I draw my inspiration from what surrounds me, things like; architecture, textures, contrasts like light and darkness, poor materials with precious ones or geometric combined with organic; also from culture and concepts like happiness, satire or nostalgia.
My jewellery goal is to be desired, loved and questioned.
I use the traditional jewellery materials and techniques as a base for the workpiece structure and in the process of building it I resort to a variety of different techniques and materials, from other crafts to enhance the piece.
Maria Rita was born in Lisbon in 1970. In 1998 she started her studies in jewellery at the Herefordshire Art School in England and finished in 2004 in Lisbon at the CONTACTO DIRECTO jewellery school. Since 2004 she as worked for several jewellers as a freelancer while developing her own work. Over the years she as attended workshops in the field of silversmithing as well participated in collective exhibitions.
